Seasonal Food: March

Here at Walmer Court Farm Shop, we love spring! The Daffodils, the lambs, the (hopefully) sunshine.

We also love the seasonal veg that comes along with this time of the year

March is a great month for seasonal produce in the UK. As the weather starts to warm up, we can look forward to an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables that are at their peak of flavor and nutrition. Here are some of the seasonal fruits and vegetables that you can find in the UK in March:

  1. Rhubarb: Rhubarb is a tart and tangy vegetable that's in season in March. It's great for making jams, pies, and crumbles, or for adding a sweet and sour flavor to savory dishes like pork chops or roasted vegetables.

  2. Spring onions: Spring onions, also known as scallions, are a milder and sweeter version of onions that are perfect for adding flavor to salads, soups, and stir-fries. They're in season from March to May and are a great source of vitamins C and K.

  3. Purple sprouting broccoli: Purple sprouting broccoli is a delicious and nutritious vegetable that's in season from February to April. It's packed with vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, folate, and iron, and is a great addition to stir-fries and roasted vegetable dishes.

  4. New potatoes: New potatoes are baby potatoes that are harvested early in the season, making them tender and sweet. They're perfect for boiling, roasting, or steaming, and are a great source of vitamin C and potassium.

  5. Parsnips: Parsnips are a root vegetable that are in season from October to March. They have a sweet and nutty flavor and are great for roasting, mashing, or adding to soups and stews. They're also a good source of fiber and vitamin C.

In addition to these seasonal vegetables, you can also find fresh fruits like apples and pears that are still in season in March in the UK.
